Before you make a decision about what's best for you, it's a good idea to get the REAL facts about abortion. Here are some common questions about abortion and factual answers that are supported by sound scientific research and/or current law.
FICTION: If I have an abortion it will impact future pregnancies.
FACT: Safe, uncomplicated abortion is not scientifically linked to a woman's ability to have children in the future.
FICTION: Abortion can cause breast cancer.
FACT: Abortion does not cause or increase the risk of breast cancer. The myth that breast cancer and abortion are linked is primarily promoted by groups and individuals who oppose abortion regardless of its safety. In 2003, the federal government put together a team of researchers to review the many studies that have been conducted on abortion and breast cancer. They concluded that there were serious flaws in the studies that attempted to link abortion and breast cancer. The best studies, including one of 1.5 million women in Denmark, have found no link between cancer and abortion whatsoever.
FICTION: I need my parent's permission to have an abortion.
FACT: California does not have any laws on the books that require parental notification for teens to access abortion services or birth control. All services at PPGG are 100% confidential, unless you share that you are in a dangerous situation and in those circumstances, we will act to help you as required by law.
FACT: Abortion is a safe and common medical procedure.
Surgical abortion is a very safe procedure and is about 10 times safer than giving birth if performed before the 18th week of pregnancy. Most abortions – 90 percent – are performed in the first 12 weeks of pregnancy.
FACT: Mid-term surgical abortions are still safe, legal and available.
Ever since the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the federal abortion ban on April 19th, 2007, there has been some confusion around the accessibility of safe and legal abortions in the second trimester. Despite the ban, PPGG remains able to provide abortion services up to 18 weeks, and utilizes medical practices that are deemed safest under the new law.
