Implanon

How It Works
  • Prevents ovulation (egg release from the ovary).
  • Thickens the mucus of the cervix so that sperm cannot enter the uterus (womb).
  • Changes the lining of the uterus, making it unsuitable for pregnancy.

How To Get It
  • A small flexible rod is inserted under the skin of the upper arm by a clinician. Must be removed at the end of 3 years (may be removed sooner if requested).
  • This method is newly available at PPGG, ask your clinician for details!

Benefits
  • Doesn't interrupt sex.
  • Long acting.
  • Easily reversable and rapid return to usual fertility.
  • May reduce menstruation and PMS.

Concerns
  • May cause irregular menstrual bleeding.
  • No protection against STIs/HIV.
  • Rare side effects include: headaches, weight gain, sore breasts and nausea.

Effectiveness: 99.9%
