Lea's Shield

What is It

The Lea's Shield is a one-size, cup-shaped, washable, and reusable vaginal barrier contraceptive device composed of medical grade silicon rubber. Each shield lasts about six months.

How It Works
  • The Shield is made of silicone, is shaped like a cup, and lasts about six months.
  • It contains an air valve to help create a tight fit and a loop for easier removal.
  • It fits over the cervix and must be used with a contraceptive cream or jelly.

How to Get It
  • A clinician must prescribe you the shield.
  • A clinician must also show you how to fit and insert the shield.

How to Increase Effectiveness
  • Use it every time you have sex.
  • Always use contraceptive cream or jelly when using the shield.
  • Check to see that the Shield is covering the cervix before and every time you have sex.
  • Leave the Shield in place for at least eight hours after the last time you've had sex.
  • Check the Shield for holes or weak spots once a month.

Benefits
  • It can be left in place for up to 40 hours before intercourse.
  • It has fewer known side effects than hormonal methods.
  • It rarely causes changes in the menstrual period.

Concerns
  • The Shield offers no protection against STIs/HIV.
  • Some women may have an allergic reaction to the silicone or spermicide.
  • Some women may develop bladder infections.
  • Some women or their partners may feel pain or discomfort.
  • Some women may find it difficult to put in or take out.
  • May be pushed out of place during intercourse, and pregnancy may result.
  • Intercourse must happen within 40 hours of insertion.
  • Of 100 women who use the Shield, about 15 will become pregnant during the first year of use.

Effectiveness: · 85% effective when used with a contraceptive cream or jelly.
