Vaginitis is an infection of the vagina that has many causes. The most common causes of vaginitis are yeast, Trichomonas and Bacterial Vaginosis.
| How Do You Get Vaginitis? |
- Sexual contact with someone who has Trichomonas
- These infections can also occur in women who have not had sexual contact
- A change in the balance of bacteria in the vagina occurs
- Change in vaginal discharge (more than usual, different color, bad odor)
- Itching or burning in or near the vagina
- Painful urination
| How Can You Know For Sure? |
- A sample of discharge examined under a microscope
Depending on the type of infection:
- Vaginal creams, suppositories
- Antibiotics
| What Can Happen If You Don't Take Care of It? |
- Extreme discomfort which will get worse
- May cause severe infection of the reproductive organs leading to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
