What is Vaginitis?

Vaginitis is an infection of the vagina that has many causes. The most common causes of vaginitis are yeast, Trichomonas and Bacterial Vaginosis.

How Do You Get Vaginitis?
  • Sexual contact with someone who has Trichomonas
  • These infections can also occur in women who have not had sexual contact
  • A change in the balance of bacteria in the vagina occurs

What Are the Symptoms?
  • Change in vaginal discharge (more than usual, different color, bad odor)
  • Itching or burning in or near the vagina
  • Painful urination

How Can You Know For Sure?
  • A sample of discharge examined under a microscope

How Is It Treated?

Depending on the type of infection:

  • Vaginal creams, suppositories
  • Antibiotics

What Can Happen If You Don't Take Care of It?
  • Extreme discomfort which will get worse
  • May cause severe infection of the reproductive organs leading to Pelvic Inflammatory Disease (PID)
