Diaphragm

 

How It Works
  • Covers the cervix (opening to uterus).
  • Holds spermicidal cream or jelly which kills sperm.

     
How To Get It
  • Pelvic exam needed to measure correct size.

     
How It's Used
  • Diaphragm with cream or spermicidal jelly is inserted into vagina no more than 2 hours before sexual intercourse. New application of spermicidal cream or jelly is needed before each act of intercourse.
  • Diaphragm is left in place at least 6 hours after intercourse but no more than 24 hours.

     
Benefits
  • No major health concerns.
  • Spermicidal cream or jelly can be bought in a drugstore without prescription.
  • If properly cared for, diaphragm can be used for several years.
  • Provides some protection against STIs/HIV.

     
Concerns
  • Can be messy.
  • Occasionally a man or woman is allergic to a brand of spermicidal cream or jelly (can change brands).
  • May increase risk of urinary tract infection (bladder infection).
