Your Pelvic Exam

A swab is used to take some cells from your cervix. These cell will be tested (the Pap test) to make sure that no unhealthy (pre-cancerous) cells are present. The clinician will also insert a finger in the vagina to feel the uterus and ovaries to make sure everything is healthy while checking for any signs of infection.

Who Should Have a Pelvic Exam?

Teens who are sexually active and women over age 18—even if they are not sexually active—should get regular pelvic exams. Some health care providers recommend that women have a pelvic exam every year, and others recommend that women in good health only need to have one every 2-3 years. Planned Parenthood Golden Gate recommends that women have a pelvic exam every year.

Talking First

The first part of the appointment will be a talk with your doctor or clinician. They'll be interested to know about your medical history and your sexual activity. It's important to be honest—tell them if you've been sexually active, pregnant or have had any sexually transmitted infections, so that they can give you the right kind of examination based on who you are and what your lifestyle is at that time.
