How can I tell my health care provider about my health concerns without feeling embarrassed?

Health care providers have heard many people's health concerns over the years and have received all kinds of questions about sex, sexually transmitted infections, birth control methods, pregnancy as well as lots of other health topics. No question is a dumb question. In fact, it's much easier for providers to help patients when they're aware that a patient has a particular concern.

How can I tell my partner that I don't (or do) want to have sex?

Talking about sex is sometimes difficult, but clear communication is very important. If you do not want to engage in any type of sexual behavior or sexual intercourse, tell your partner plainly and clearly. This is usually easier when you are not already in a passionate moment.

However, even if sexual behavior has started, both you and your partner have the right to stop at any time. The other person needs to respect that decision. It is never okay for someone to try to persuade or force his or her partner into doing something he or she does not want to do, sexually or otherwise.

My partner yells at me a lot and hits me sometimes; is that normal?

No. Although it's unfortunately fairly common, yelling and hitting are examples of relationship abuse or domestic violence, and these behaviors are never okay. In many situations, the yelling and hitting can increase over time and can cause serious injury and even death.

A person who is in a relationship where a partner is using power to control her or him should call the National Domestic Violence Hotline for help. Their 24-hour phone number is 1-800-799-SAFE. This hotline refers callers to safe houses in their own communities where they can receive help.
